What you need to know about privacy

It’s no secret that our personal data is increasingly being collected, sorted, and used to sell us things, influence our opinions, or even control our behavior. But what many people don’t realize is just how much of their personal information is out there, and how easily it can be accessed.

In this article, we’ll take a look at what privacy is, how it’s being eroded, and what you can do to protect yourself.

What is privacy

Most people have a general understanding of what privacy is – it’s the ability to keep our personal information safe from public view. However, there’s no one-size-fits-all definition of privacy, as what we consider to be private information varies from person to person.

Some people might be comfortable sharing their addresses and phone numbers with the world, while others would consider that information to be highly personal and only to be shared with close friends and family.

How to protect your privacy online

There are a number of steps you can take to protect your privacy online. Here are some of the most important:

Be careful what you post on social media

Social media is one of the main ways our personal information is shared online. Be careful about what you post on social media, and consider making your accounts private so that only people you know and trust can see your posts.

Think twice before you click

It’s important to be mindful of the links you click on and the attachments you open, as they could lead to malicious websites or files that could infect your computer with malware. If you’re ever unsure about a link or attachment, you can hover over it to see where it’s going to take you, and you can use an antivirus program to scan files before you open them.

Keep your software up to date

One of the best ways to protect your computer from malware is to make sure your software is up to date. This includes your operating system, web browser, and any apps you have installed.
