3 Easy Ways to Change the Default Directory of Command Prompt

If you find yourself with a command prompt that is permanently set to the default directory of C:, here are three easy ways to change it.

The “how to change command prompt default directory windows 10” is a tutorial that teaches users how to change the default directory of their command prompt. This can be done by one of three easy ways.

This article will show you how to modify the default directory of the command prompt in three different methods.

The default directory in any version of Windows when you start a command prompt is either C:WindowsSystem32 or C:Usersuser name>.

Here are three easy ways to change the default directory of the command prompt to a different location.

To change the default directory of the command prompt, follow these steps:

Changing cmd’s default path is straightforward, however certain steps may fail if you access the command prompt as administrator. The default path of cmd will be modified in the three methods I’ve listed below, regardless of whether you’ve launched cmd in administrator mode.

1. Modify cmd’s Start-in path:

  1. In the Windows search box, type command prompt. Open the file location by right-clicking.
  2. Open the properties by right-clicking on the Command Prompt shortcut. Under the Shortcut tab, change the ‘Start in’ box as shown below and click OK. 1632849522_797_3-Easy-Ways-to-Change-the-Default-Directory-of-Command
  3. Verify that the path has been updated by reopening the command prompt. 1632849523_371_3-Easy-Ways-to-Change-the-Default-Directory-of-Command

Note that this method of changing the default directory only works when the command prompt is opened in normal mode. When the command prompt is opened as administrator, however, this does not function.

2. Modify the command prompt’s target folder:

  1. As explained in method #1, open the command prompt shortcut location.
  2. This will modify the target path to %windir% system32cmd.exe /k “cd C:”

Note:

  • Set the path below if your new path is on C drive (where Windows is installed). My target path is C: in my instance. TechSupportWhale

system32cmd.exe /k “cd C:TechSupportWhale” %windir% system32cmd.exe /k “%windir% system32cmd.exe /k “%windir% system32c

  • If the directory path you want is on a different disk, you’ll need to alter the path as shown below. My target directory is on E disk in this situation (not C drive where Windows is installed).

system32cmd.exe /k “cd E:TechSupportWhale & E:” percent windir percent system32cmd.exe /k “cd E:TechSupportWhale & E:”

When executed as administrator, this will modify the default directory path in command prompt.

3. Using the registry editor

Though altering the default command path in the registry is a straightforward step, we don’t advocate it until you’ve already completed point #2.

  • By putting regedit into the Windows search box and pressing Enter, you may access the registry editor.
  • Follow the way. ComputerSoftwareMicrosoftCommand ProcessorHKEY CURRENT USER
  • Create a new “String Value” with the name Autorun by selecting the Command Processor folder and clicking Edit New String Value.
  • Update the value data to cd /d E:TechSupportWhale by double-clicking on the newly generated Autorun.

Conclusion:

To change the default directory in the Windows command prompt, just do so. The first two methods are the most straightforward, and they should get the desired outcome. However, if there is a problem, update the register.

Take a backup of the registry before making any changes if you are unsure about the registry modifications. You may undo the modifications if there are any problems.

I hope you found the information you needed in this article. Greetings!!!
