Digital Video Disc (DVD) | Digital Versatile Disc (DVD)
Originally intended for use as a video medium, it has now been expanded to include a variety of data storage capabilities. Depending on the media and technology utilized, the storage capacity varies from 4.7GB to 17GB for the whole 12cm disk (see below).
BD stands for Blu-ray Disc.
Designed to replace DVDs in terms of high-definition video. Depending on the technology, these discs may hold anywhere from 25GB to 128GB of data.

ROM stands for Read-Only Memory.
A disk that can be read but not written to that contains data.
R stands for Recordable.
A disk that can be written to and read from several times. There are two types of DVDs: -R and +R, which are virtually the same in terms of functionality but are incompatible with one another. Why? Because two corporations / groupings of companies could not agree on a technical standard, they created their own. Most DVD drives nowadays accept both, thus this is usually no longer a problem.
RW stands for rewriteable.
A disk that can be repeatedly written to, read from, erased, and rewritten (over 1,000). Again, there are two types of DVDs: -RW and +RW. The +RW is thought to be significantly more dependable. Because they aren’t compatible technologies, you’ll want to double-check that your drive supports both, which most do these days.
RE stands for Recordable Erasable.
Only available on Blu-ray This disc may be written, erased, and re-recorded as many times as necessary.
RAM stands for Random Access Memory.
This technology, which is only accessible for DVDs, is comparable to RW in nature. It may be written to, read from, rewritten, and deleted many times (over 100,000). It does so in a different way than -RW and +RW DVD disks, and is thought to be better for retaining data for longer periods of time (think backups) and can contain somewhat more data when utilizing dual layer disks.
